Our Primary Program – 3 years – 6 years
Children under the age of 6 years have a once in a life time ability to absorb knowledge from their surroundings with what Dr. Maria Montessori called the ‘absorbent mind’. The absorbent mind is at its peak receptivity during the preschool years. Throughout this period of rapid social and emotional development, the hands-on materials in our primary classrooms keep the children in touch with learning as they build concentration and an increasing sense of order.
Like the toddler program, the environment is child sized. The lessons and activities are all within easy reach for our young friends and they are laid out in an organized, inviting manner. While many activities take place simultaneously in the primary classrooms, the atmosphere is peaceful.
The children are presented with a wide variety of lessons and activities designed to foster and encourage independence. These carefully designed lessons are presented one on one or in small groups. Areas of the curriculum include: practical life, sensorial, language arts, handwriting, math, science, history, and geography. Music, art Zumba and Spanish are also integral parts of our curriculum. At HMS, our curriculum is designed to build a strong foundation in academics and our aim is to help each child foster the skills that play a crucial role in socialization, empathy and intellectual growth, confidence, self-esteem, and self-control.
“The Montessori experience at an early age prepares children at a later age to be able to isolate, classify, discriminate, analyze, and use critical thinking skills. It is the basis for creative learning and intellectual curiosity.” ~ Dr. Maria Montessori
